| Storyline After years in a loving home, Jon, a toy, was forgotten, deserted and ultimately betrayed by his adoptive mother. He returns to live a sad life as a worker on the line. With each new birth, Jon laments the days when life was good and he was loved. Jon learns that the evil child catcher, Yuri, has discovered they stole a new born baby from the factory floor, he moves into action to escape the oppressive city and find a safe home for his wife and child. With each day, Jon and Mary find the safety and sense of home they have always longed for, but it's not enough. Jon is torn between saving the mother he has always dreamed or saving his own family. Just came back from the second screening of Patch Town from BIFFF festival. I have to say that despite its flaws, the movie is good if not very good at times. It's hard to imagine doing that kind of films today with such a budget. Special effects are interesting here, because small budget will conflict pretty quickly with high concept designs. Things can look quickly ugly if you dare going into highly designed fantasy. Not that they achieved Tim Burton level nor Terry Gilliam level but still the achievement is very strong because it's never a problem, the aesthetic from A to Z is coherent, interesting and actually looks like something.
ReplyDeleteThe story starts very strong with babies being born from cabbages, then transformed into dolls by their creator. These dolls are sold to kids and little girls but they are conscious and remember how the kids treated them. Our hero, Jon (awesomely played by Rob Ramsay) is now working at the factory for babies coming from cabbages, and his days as a doll are long been gone. Although, deep somewhere in his memory, he remembers the voice of his 'mom' saying she will love him forever. A quest ensue.
I won't go in all the details of the story because there's more but it's a very interesting one and, more importantly, 80% of the development is very touching and interesting.
I can't say the end satisfied me in the sense that it goes Disney channel movie while it started Burtonesque, and both of these universes collapse. Maybe the director had too much love for his project and went all for the emotions of its story. Still, the movie is really a success and Craig Goodwill is definitely a director to look at in the near future.
I strongly recommend this film for the songs, the emotions, the humor, the cleverness and the performances of Rob Ramsay and the actress who plays his wife.
